Rain Design mStand - The Desk Stand That Actually Lasts a Decade

I want to tell you something honest: I have used a Rain Design mStand for several years, and I have never once considered replacing it. Not because I haven't looked at alternatives, but because the mStand simply does not age. The machined aluminum does not flex, scratch, discolor, or loosen. It sits on the desk exactly as it did when I took it out of the box, and it will sit the same way in five years.

Build and Stability

The mStand is a single piece of machined aluminum - no hinges, no moving parts, no assembly. It is a sculpted ramp with a raised lip at the base to hold the laptop in place. The silicone pads at the contact points are embedded into machined recesses, not stuck on with adhesive that will eventually peel.

The weight is around 820g - heavy for a stand, but that weight is the entire stability mechanism. You cannot move this stand by accidentally nudging your laptop. On any surface that is not actively slippery, the mStand does not budge.

There is a thoughtful cable management slot on the left side of the stand's neck - your power cable routes through it, keeping the desk clean. It is a small detail but I notice it every time I reconnect my laptop.

Who Should Buy and Who Should Skip

Buy it if: You have a permanent desk setup (home office or corporate desk), your laptop is 13–15.6 inches, you plan to stay at this desk for years, and you want something that looks genuinely excellent. It is the correct stand for MacBook users who want visual coherence with Apple hardware. The mStand's silver or space gray aluminum finish matches the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air chassis materials exactly.

Skip it if: You need adjustable height. You need portability. Your laptop is 17 inches. Your desk is shared or temporary.
