The WD Black SN8100 2TB is the fastest consumer NVMe drive WD makes. Gen5 doubles the PCIe bandwidth available to an M.2 SSD, and the SN8100 uses most of it - but there is a real conversation to have about whether this matters for how you actually use a PC.
Gen5 Reality Check
PCIe Gen5 NVMe requires a Gen5 M.2 slot on your motherboard. That currently means:
- AMD: X870/X870E or B850 platforms (Ryzen 9000 series)
- Intel: Z890 or Z890E platforms (Core Ultra 200 series)
If your board is X570, B550, Z690, Z790, or anything older, this drive runs as Gen4 at best. The SN8100 is not backward compatible to full Gen5 performance on Gen4 slots.
The SN8100 is also one of the hottest consumer SSDs available. Under sustained load, it can exceed 70°C without a heatsink. In Indian summer conditions - 35–40°C ambient - thermal throttling becomes a real concern without proper cooling. A heatsink is mandatory, not a nice-to-have. Factor that into the build cost.

Who Should Actually Buy the SN8100 2TB?
Let me be direct. Gen5 NVMe is not meaningfully faster than Gen4 for:
- Gaming - GPU and VRAM bottleneck load times, not storage sequential speed
- Web browsing, office work, general computing - nowhere near saturating Gen4
- Most 4K video editing - Gen4 SSDs already exceed what most editing workflows require
The SN8100 makes sense for:
- 8K RAW video editing with large simultaneous streams
- High-throughput database or simulation workloads
- Scientific computing or data analysis pipelines
- Future-proofing a high-end Gen5 platform build (Z890/X870E)
- Content creators who regularly move 100GB+ files and time is money
For gaming and typical creative work, the WD SN850X 2TB at ₹13,000–₹18,000 is the rational choice. The SN8100 costs ₹7,000–₹10,000 more for a speed increase that does not translate to visible gains in daily use.
Thermal Management in India
Indian summers are not friendly to Gen5 drives. The SN8100's controller generates significant heat - plan for:
- Motherboard heatsink or WD's heatsink variant
- Good case airflow directed over the M.2 slot
- Avoid placing directly below a hot GPU

It is physically compatible with any M.2 slot, but it runs at Gen4 speeds on Gen4 slots - defeating the purpose entirely. On Gen4, you are paying Gen5 prices for Gen4 performance. Buy the SN850X 2TB instead.
