Where it earns its place is pairing with even a basic GT 1030 or GTX 1650 — in that configuration it is a meaningfully faster everyday machine than anything the Athlon 3000G can offer, at 4 real cores with SMT. If you have a GPU, this is the better chip. If you don't, look at the Athlon 3000G or Ryzen 3 5300G instead.
Four Cores, No Display — Understand This Before You Buy
I want to be direct because the no-iGPU situation causes real problems for first-time builders. The Ryzen 3 4100 has no integrated graphics processor. Productivity: 4 cores manages light video editing, browser workloads, and coding tasks. Adobe Premiere with a 1080p timeline works. 4K Premiere editing is painful — the render queue is slow and CPU-limited. For that use case, stretch to the Ryzen 5 5600.
