MSI's "Max" refresh line exists for one reason: BIOS chip capacity. The original B450 Tomahawk launched in 2018, long before Ryzen 5000 existed, and older B450 boards need a BIOS flash using an earlier Ryzen CPU before they'll even boot a 5000-series chip. The Max refresh uses a bigger BIOS chip that ships with Ryzen 5000 support already flashed in, so you can drop in a Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5800X on day one with zero BIOS gymnastics. That alone is worth knowing before you buy any older B450 board secondhand.
Beyond that, the Tomahawk name carries real weight in MSI's lineup. This isn't a stripped-back budget board wearing a nicer heatsink, it's built with what MSI calls "military class" components: better capacitors, a beefier VRM with extended heatsinks, and a Steel Armor PCIe slot to stop your GPU from sagging and tearing the connector over time. Two M.2 slots (one with its own heatsink) and six SATA3 ports round out the storage side.
Still B450, Still No PCIe 4.0
Worth repeating even on the nicest board in this tier: B450 caps out at PCIe 3.0 on both the M.2 slots and the GPU slot. The Tomahawk Max's VRM strength is about power delivery to the CPU, not storage or GPU bandwidth. If PCIe 4.0 NVMe speeds matter to your build, no B450 board gets you there, you need B550 at minimum.
