8TB. That is enough space for over 1,000 full HD movies, 300,000+ high-resolution photos, or decades of documents and downloads. The Seagate Barracuda 8TB at ₹11,000–16,000 is the largest consumer-grade Barracuda you can buy, and it exists for one purpose: storing enormous amounts of data cheaply.

This is not a mainstream component. Most gaming PCs have no use for 8TB. But for specific use cases in India - media server builders, content creators with years of footage, anyone building a NAS or home archive - it is worth understanding properly.

What You Are Actually Getting

The Barracuda 8TB runs at 5400 RPM across multiple platters. Sequential read/write sits around 190 MB/s - reasonably competitive for an HDD of this capacity and comparable to the 4TB model. The drive uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR), not SMR. This matters: SMR (shingled magnetic recording) drives have terrible write performance under sustained load because they must rewrite overlapping tracks. The Barracuda 8TB's CMR recording means sustained writes stay consistent - important for long backup sessions or continuous recording.

Who Needs 8TB in a Desktop PC

Let me be specific. The typical gaming PC user does not need this drive. Even someone with 50 installed games is looking at 2–3TB maximum. 8TB is for people who have exhausted smaller capacities and need to keep large volumes of data locally.

Home media servers running Plex or Jellyfin - 8TB holds a serious local library. If you are ripping your Blu-ray collection or downloading content for offline access, 8TB means you will not run out of space for years.

Video content creators - Editors who work with 4K footage, especially long-form content, can fill 4TB drives in a few months of active shooting. 8TB provides a deep archive for completed projects without needing to constantly offload to external drives.

CCTV/DVR systems - Some home surveillance setups use desktop HDDs for continuous recording. 8TB supports extended recording windows at high resolution before overwriting old footage.

Long-term archive collectors - Some people simply do not delete things. 8TB of documents, photos, software backups, and downloads accumulated over years is a real scenario. This drive handles it.
