Crucial has since moved the lineup forward with the T705, and it's important to be clear about what this actually is: not a new product line, a refined successor built on an updated controller revision that pushes higher sustained speeds and better thermal behaviour than the original T700.
If you've been comparing the two and wondering which to buy, the answer is simple, buy the T705. It's priced closely enough to the T700 that there's no meaningful reason to buy the older platform once the T705 is in stock at your preferred retailer. Crucial themselves are positioning the T705 as the current flagship, expect the T700 to gradually phase out of retail listings over the coming months.
What Actually Improved
The T705 pushes sequential read speeds up to roughly 14,500 MB/s, a real jump over the T700's already-fast 12,400 MB/s, and sustained write performance holds up better under longer workloads thanks to a refined thermal and cache management approach. Random IOPS numbers are also higher, which matters more than sequential speed for most real-world responsiveness, things like large project file access, VM boot times, and heavy multitasking.
The T705 also comes in a heatsink-equipped variant by default in most retail listings, which is the right call given how hot Gen5 controllers run. If you're buying the bare version for a laptop or SFF build with its own cooling solution, confirm compatibility first.

Where the T705 Actually Helps
Same caveat as every Gen5 drive on this site: you need a PCIe Gen5 M.2 slot to see these numbers, meaning a recent Z890 or X870E/X670E-class motherboard. Drop it into a Gen4 slot and it runs at Gen4 speeds, still very good, but you've overpaid for headroom you can't use yet.
Where it earns its keep: large sequential file operations, exporting big video projects, copying large datasets, running VMs off the drive. Gaming load times will be effectively identical to a good Gen4 drive, no game currently pushes storage hard enough to show the difference.
Who Should Buy / Who Should Skip
Buy it if: you were already considering the T700 (get the T705 instead at similar pricing), you do content creation or development work that stresses storage throughput, or you're building a Gen5-capable flagship rig and want Crucial's platform specifically at a lower price than Samsung or WD's flagship 4TB options.
