Budget AM5 boards exist, and the MSI B650M Gaming Plus WiFi is one of the better ones. The catch with any B650M board is the same: you're giving up VRM headroom and sometimes an M.2 slot to hit a lower price. For the right build, that's a perfectly reasonable trade.

This board targets compact builds - mATX cases like the Antec P8, Cooler Master Q300L, or Fractal Meshify C. If you're working with a ₹16,000–₹20,000 budget specifically for the motherboard and you need mATX, this is the AM5 board I'd recommend looking at first.

Key Features

The VRM configuration runs 8+2+1 phases - adequate for the Ryzen 5 7600 and Ryzen 7 9700X at stock speeds, but not a board I'd push into Ryzen 9 territory. At 120W TDP and below, thermal headroom is fine. Above that, the power delivery becomes a limiting factor.

Two M.2 slots rather than three - one PCIe 5.0, one PCIe 4.0. For most builds this is fine: one for your boot drive, one for secondary storage. Only a concern if you're running a NAS-style setup with multiple NVMe drives.

WiFi 6 is included (not 6E). 2.5G LAN rounds out the network connectivity. Four SATA ports remain for those with existing SATA SSDs or HDDs. USB layout is functional: USB 3.2 Gen 2 at the rear, which covers the basics.

The BIOS is MSI's Click BIOS 5 - same as their ATX boards. Expo support works correctly for DDR5 memory. I've run 6000MHz CL30 kits on this board without issues, which matters because DDR5 memory pricing at 6000MHz is now reasonable in India.

Fan headers are reduced versus ATX - typically four, which is enough for most mATX cases that run two or three fans total.

Who Should Buy This

This board is for builders who need mATX form factor and want AM5 platform at a budget entry price. Pair it with a Ryzen 5 7600 or Ryzen 7 9700X and you have a compact, capable system. The Ryzen 5 7600 especially is a great match - lower TDP, plenty of CPU performance for gaming, and the VRM stays comfortable.

Do not pair this with Ryzen 9 chips. The 8+2+1 VRM configuration is not built for sustained 170W loads. You'll see thermal throttling and potentially long-term VRM degradation.

Skip this if: you have an ATX case (get the Tomahawk instead for better VRM headroom at a small premium), you want three M.2 slots, or you need more than four fan headers for elaborate cooling setups.
