Why X870E Is Not Just "X670E With a New Sticker"
I've covered a good number of X670E and B850 boards on this site, so let me be direct about what's actually different here, because a lot of retail listings blur the line. AMD set stricter baseline requirements for X870E than it ever did for X670E:
- PCIe 5.0 is mandatory on both the GPU slot and the primary M.2 slot. On X670E, PCIe 5.0 support was inconsistent between vendors — some boards did 5.0 on the GPU slot, some didn't bother, and it varied M.2 slot to M.2 slot. X870E closes that gap. Every X870E board, including budget ones, does PCIe 5.0 in both places.
- Native USB4 is mandatory, not optional. X670E boards frequently added USB4 via a third-party controller if at all. On X870E, at least two 40Gbps USB4 Type-C ports are part of the spec, and AMD's chipset silicon handles it natively rather than through an add-in controller eating PCIe lanes.
- VRM expectations are higher across the board, because X870E launched specifically to support Ryzen 9000X3D-class chips (9950X3D, 9900X3D) at their full power envelope for sustained periods, not just burst boost.
So when I say X870E is AMD's current flagship AM5 chipset, I mean it in a fairly literal sense: it's the newest, strictest spec, and it sits above X870 (which only mandates PCIe 5.0 on the M.2 slot, GPU slot can be 4.0) and well above B850, which is essentially a Ryzen-9000-validated B650 refresh with no PCIe 5.0 or USB4 requirement at all. This is a real gap that's existed on GetPC until now, and the Crosshair X870E Hero is as good a place as any to start filling it, because it's the board AMD's own marketing points to when it talks about what X870E is capable of.
What the Hero Actually Gets You
ASUS puts its best VRM implementation on the Crosshair line, and the Hero doesn't cut corners here. You're looking at an 18+2+2 power stage design rated well past what a 170W-class Ryzen 9950X3D or 9950X will ever draw, with enough thermal headroom in the heatsink stack that sustained all-core loads under an AIO don't cause throttling. This is the board I'd point to if someone asks "what motherboard lets my 9950X3D run at its rated boost clocks indefinitely, not just for a few seconds."
Storage is five M.2 slots, with at least one running PCIe 5.0 x4 directly off the CPU and the rest split across CPU and chipset lanes at PCIe 4.0. ASUS ships this with its usual M.2 backplate-and-heatsink combo, which matters more than it sounds like on a board this dense, because thermal throttling on a Gen5 SSD under sustained sequential writes is a real thing, not a spec-sheet footnote.

Who Should Buy the Crosshair X870E Hero
Buy this if you're building around a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, 9950X, or 9900X3D and plan to run it at sustained high load for years — rendering, heavy compilation, or serious all-core workloads, not just gaming bursts. Buy this if you want USB4 without a third-party controller, five M.2 slots without compromise, and a VRM that will still have headroom when the next AM5 CPU refresh lands. Buy this if the price simply isn't the deciding factor and you want the best AM5 board ASUS currently makes without stepping up to the Godlike-tier price bracket from MSI.
Skip this if you're gaming at 1440p or 4K with a single GPU and no plans for extreme overclocking — a Gigabyte X870E Aorus Master or ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi gets you PCIe 5.0 and USB4 for ₹15,000-20,000 less, and the extra VRM headroom on the Hero won't show up in your frame rate. Skip this if you're on a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or similar mid-range CPU — you're paying flagship prices for VRM capacity you'll never use.

The X670E Extreme is ASUS's previous-generation halo board and is still sold at similarly high prices, but the Hero gives you guaranteed PCIe 5.0 across GPU and M.2, native USB4, and current-generation VRM design at a lower price than the Extreme typically commands. Buy X670E Extreme only if you find genuinely clearance pricing on old stock.

Ryzen 9 9950X3D is the natural pairing given the VRM headroom — you get full 3D V-Cache gaming performance plus genuine multi-core workstation capability. Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a reasonable step down if you don't need the extra cores. If you're on a Ryzen 9 7950X from the previous generation, the Hero still makes sense as a platform upgrade that carries you into the next CPU refresh without a second motherboard purchase.
Mostly yes. Gaming workloads don't stress VRM or PCIe bandwidth the way sustained multi-core workloads do. If gaming is 90%+ of your use case, a well-reviewed B850 board saves significant money with no measurable frame rate difference. X870E earns its keep on multi-core sustained loads and future-proofing for PCIe 5.0 storage and peripherals.
