WD Blue SA510 1TB: The Underrated Samsung 870 EVO Alternative in India

The WD Blue SA510 doesn't get as much attention as the Samsung 870 EVO in Indian PC building communities, but it should. Western Digital has been producing consumer SSDs since 2016 through their SanDisk acquisition, and the SA510 reflects that maturity. At similar or lower prices than the 870 EVO with comparable specs, it's worth a serious look before defaulting to Samsung.

Drive Specs and NAND

The SA510 uses TLC NAND with a dedicated DRAM cache. That DRAM cache is the key differentiator from budget SATA SSDs - it means consistent latency and sustained write speeds that hold up under longer operations. Sequential reads hit 560 MB/s, writes 520 MB/s on the 1TB variant.

WD doesn't publicly specify which NAND fab supplies the SA510 - they source from multiple fabs - but the controller and firmware are WD's own mature stack. Endurance is rated at 400TBW for the 1TB model, compared to 600TBW on the Samsung 870 EVO 1TB. For home use over 5 years, 400TBW is more than adequate. Even a heavy desktop user doing 50GB of writes per day would take 21 years to hit 400TBW.

Performance vs the 870 EVO

Sequential numbers are neck-and-neck - all three drives hit the SATA III ceiling. The WD SA510 writes at 520 MB/s versus the 870 EVO's 530 MB/s - a 10 MB/s difference that produces no perceptible real-world difference. In sustained write benchmarks over large data sets, the 870 EVO maintains slightly more consistent speeds, but the gap is small enough that for a game library or secondary storage drive, you won't notice it.

The SA510's 400TBW endurance versus the 870 EVO's 600TBW is the clearest measurable disadvantage - and for most users, still irrelevant at typical workloads.

Availability: MDComputers and Vedant both stock the SA510 regularly. Less common in offline tier-2 city shops compared to Samsung, but online delivery is fast and reliable to most pin codes.

Power cut note: Same as all SSDs - no moving parts means no crash risk during power cuts. Safe for cities with frequent load-shedding.

Who Should Buy the WD Blue SA510 1TB

Buy it if you need a SATA SSD for secondary game storage or an OS drive on a SATA-only system, and you want to save ₹500–1,500 compared to the 870 EVO without sacrificing meaningful performance. Also a good pick for NAS builds or secondary storage in older workstations.

Who Should Skip It

Same caveat as every SATA SSD: if you have a free M.2 NVMe slot, the WD Blue SN580 1TB NVMe at ₹5,500–8,000 overlaps this price range with 7x sequential throughput. For new builds, NVMe always wins if the slot is available.
