The VRM on the B850 Tomahawk is strong enough to handle Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X without thermal concerns — that's an improvement over the B650 tier.

VRM is a robust configuration for a B850 board — MSI hasn't published the exact phase count in all documentation, but independent measurements put it at 14+2+1 stages with high-amperage SPS power stages. In practice, it handles the Ryzen 9 9950X's 170W TDP under sustained loads, which is the real test. The B650 Tomahawk struggled with that configuration; this one doesn't.

Connectivity is a generational upgrade: WiFi 7 (tri-band, 6GHz), Bluetooth 5.4, 2.5G LAN, USB 4 (40Gbps) at the rear panel, and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. Three M.2 slots — the primary is PCIe 5.0 x4, the secondary two are PCIe 4.0. This means you can run a Gen 5 NVMe boot drive (Samsung 9100 Pro, Crucial T705 equivalent) at its rated speed.

PCIe 5.0 GPU slot is also present — relevant now that NVIDIA's next-generation cards use the additional bandwidth. ATX form factor, full complement of fan headers.

If you're pairing it with a Ryzen 5 7600 or similar budget AM5 CPU, the B650 Tomahawk is a smarter spend — the B850 features won't be utilized.
